Sharon Ramanadan
Name: Sharon Ramanadan
Qualification: Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education)
Two-thirds of the way through the Bachelor of Education (ECE) program, Malaysia-based Sharon Ramanadan, is enjoying learning about the principles and strands of New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki.
Ramanadan says she strongly believes in the key underpinning of Te Whāriki that views children as competent and confident learners, secure in their sense of belonging.
“This has helped me understand that each child has the right to holistic development in a safe and secure environment. And that as a teacher, I have an important role in supporting and providing opportunities for children to grow to their full potential so they can contribute meaningfully to society.”
She decided to enrol with the college after an Auckland-based family member recommended NZTC to her.
The busy mother of two says the wraparound student support services offered, as well as the flexible study schedule have helped her stay on track with the program.
“I’m a widow with two school aged children and I also work at a childcare centre a few days a week. At first it was challenging, but now I’m able to manage my time better and the lecturers are very helpful as well as the discussion and student support groups.
“I enjoy the flexibility of the program and I have ample time to read, research, discuss and complete assignments.”
Looking ahead to the next step in her professional journey, and with the country’s borders now fully reopened, Ramanadan is contemplating moving to New Zealand to continue her teaching career.
“I am considering a move to New Zealand and I’m thankful for NZTC in providing me a holistic and complete pathway to a good career in early childhood education.”
