Name: Eunice Selvendran

“A good education can change anyone and a good teacher can change everything.”
These were the words that resonated deeply with Sri Lankan student Eunice Selvendran, originally inspiring her to consider a career in ECE.
After moving to Malawi in Africa with her husband, Eunice realised that only a limited number of young children had access to a quality education system, encouraging her to lend a helping hand to those who didn’t through a teaching position in a local school.
“I was passionate about creating a strong foundation for the early years so that a better future can be built for the country. Right then from the bottom of my heart, I knew education was my calling. With encouragement from my husband, I felt motivated to give it my all and study an internationally recognised qualification to support me with this.”
Eunice chose to enrol in the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 6) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) as she was inspired by the college’s values.
“I love that NZTC supports its students to care, educate and serve meaningfully and effectively, as this is imperative to a good teacher in Africa and something I strive to embody in daily practice.”
Initially feeling overwhelmed with the prospect of online study, Eunice says NZTC’s dedication to student wellbeing and achievement provided her with the confidence needed to succeed.
“I was really nervous as I didn’t have anyone to physically support me with navigating the system. Being a sensitive person, I was tearing up on my first day!
“However, by day two I was smiling as the college was so supportive. The NZTC team maintains a strong online presence, creating a sense of trust among learners. They prove that online learning can be collaborative; providing support appropriate to the situation and context despite the fact that they are on the other side of the world.”
Learning about cultural diversity in New Zealand’s inclusive ECE curriculum Te Whāriki has provided Eunice with greater confidence in her teaching role.
“This exploration has helped me to work in a diverse environment like Malawi. I have been able to adopt a growth mindset and form reciprocal and authentic relationships with parents and families, whilst learning how to view every child with a holistic approach.”
